Day 2 of filming is over. I’m not sure when day 3 will be. After trying plans A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H, I’m out of ideas. It’s as God is saying… rest. Of course staying up to write on this post isn’t exactly resting, but…
For those who don’t know (I presume most of you do know), I am making a movie about Amish (or it takes place in an Amish community). The past two days have been really fun, but extremely hot. Imagine yourself in a one-room, no air-condition school house in 95 degree temperature. Yup, that was us.
Today I pretty much filmed all day so I got no brakes. No eating or drinking (the latter is not good at all.) But somewhere the boys (and mom’s) got the idea that I was dehydrated. Joshua came to me with a panicked look and asked if I had been drinking enough. I said no, I haven't been drinking enough (hey, I was honest). Later Sarah brought be a glass of water. Then Joshua comes back with a bottle of Gatorade and tells me I must drink is right then, or else I couldn’t film anymore. It wasn’t long after that, that Mrs. J comes in with two more glasses. Maybe I really did look pale O_o It was nice to know someone was thinking about me though.
Camcorders have had tough luck around here (they are really, really old keep in mind). The first day the camcorder fell down. It seemed fine, but when we got home, the tape wouldn’t come out. Dad took it the camera shop. They got the tape out, but the camcorder was ruined. Luckily we had two camcorders. Today the camcorder ran smoothly. We called it “baby†to make sure it didn’t get hurt. All went well, and we packed and went home. Dad and I came back around 6 to do a few pick-up shoots. The camcorder didn’t work. We showed it to several people, and yup, it’s broken (this camcorder has always been a bit of trouble. It’s only 17 years old =P). I was planning on doing a few shots tomorrow, but our other camcorder at home won’t work because it doesn’t have an exterior mic (we have a large shotgun mic).
We tried borrowing a camcorder. About three people don’t have an exterior mic either. Mom happened to be talking to Ben’s mom, and she mentioned that her mother has a camcorder almost just like ours. She drove all the way to Gilmer (that is about 40 minutes away). When she got back, yeah, the camcorder doesn’t work. Apparently, her parents just moved and the heat made the picture all messed up.
So that’s my story =P But really, I have had fun. The boys have been great… and the footage is really promising. Considering the camcorders we used, you would never know. The lighting is great… and other than the heat is was fun ^_^
Here are few pictures. Please note – this is not actual film shots. Just uh… production shots are something like that =P

Some "Amish" boys talking to the newspaper man. In front: Joshua "Andy," Michael "Reuben," Ben "Mark," Matthew "Simon", Hannah "Miriam", and Rebekah "Ruth". In the back is an extra the news paper writer. (Please note that building is not the school we filmed at)

I have no idea what's he is doing. That is Ben "Mark"

Aw... That's Hannah, who plays Miriam.
A few more boys: Truman "Rob", Michael "Reuben", and Jordan "Luke"

And the girls ^_^ Starting with the tallest girl and going clockwise it's Rebekah "Ruth", Jori "Katie", Hannah "Miriam," and Sarah "Naomi". Btw, Jori's dress/apron was just a quick extra costume. We took a dress, cut off the sleves, slit the back and it became an apron. Elisabeth made everything else. She did a incredible job ^_^.
